On Thursday, February 6, 2025, the leadership of the Vice Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) paid a courtesy call on the newly appointed Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Education, provided an opportunity for VCTU-G to engage the Minister on key affecting Technical Universities (TUs) in Ghana.
During the discussion, the Minister outlined four critical areas requiring urgent attention to strengthen Technical Universities. He stated that technical education must align with modern industry demands to enhance employability and innovation. “We must equip Technical Universities with state-of-the-art laboratories, workshops, and modern training facilities to ensure students receive practical, industry-relevant education,” he said. He assured the Vice-Chancellors of the government’s commitment to providing the necessary resources to achieve this.
Hon. Iddrisu also spoke about the need to expand infrastructure to accommodate the growing student population. “Government remains committed to investing in additional lecture halls, laboratories, and hostels to support quality teaching, learning, and research,” he noted.
Another key issue discussed was the difficulty Technical Universities face in accessing funds from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to complete ongoing projects. The Minister acknowledged these challenges and assured the Vice Chancellors that he would work toward ensuring equitable access to GETFund resources to support infrastructure and academic development within Technical Universities.
The VCTU-G delegation was led by the Chairman, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, Vice-Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University. Sowley from Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University, Prof. Kwadwo Adinkra-Appiah from Sunyani Technical University, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi from Accra Technical University, Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh from Kumasi Technical University, Prof. John Owusu from Koforidua Technical University, and Prof. Saaed Ibn Bashiru from Tamale Technical University.
Also present at the meeting were Mr. Hamid Kanyiti Salifu, Personal Assistant to the Minister, Ms. Matilda Azuima Esq., Head of Legal Affairs at the Ministry and Mr. Abubakar Shurabil from the Office of the Minister.
