The 2025 edition of the Ghana Technical University Sports Association (GHATUSA) Games officially kicked off on April 7, 2025, at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium, marking a vibrant celebration of athleticism, academic unity, and youth empowerment. Hosted in the historic city of Cape Coast from April 3rd to 13th, this year’s Games have brought together over 1,000 student-athletes, 400 officials, and more than 10,000 spectators—making it one of the most dynamic editions in GHATUSA’s history.
The opening ceremony was graced by Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, Vice-Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University and Chairman of the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G), who delivered a stirring keynote address. Prof. Eshun emphasized that GHATUSA is more than a sporting event—it is a platform for growth, discovery, and national development. “These Games symbolize more than competition,” he stated. “They are a powerful opportunity to bring out the best in our students while strengthening the bonds among Technical Universities across the country.”
In line with the theme “Embracing Sports for National Development: The Role of the Technical University,” Prof. Eshun underscored the value of integrating sports into academic life. “Across the world, universities produce elite athletes. Ghana’s Technical Universities must not be left behind. Our campuses should be centres of holistic human development,” he said. He further highlighted GHATUSA’s role as a springboard for student-athletes to access opportunities in regional and international competitions such as the West Africa Polytechnic Games (WAPOGA), and for national representation.
Commending the government’s ongoing investment in tertiary education infrastructure, Prof. Eshun made a passionate appeal for greater attention to sports facilities and student accommodation. “If we invest in the right infrastructure—sports complexes and modern hostels—we will create an environment that produces athletes capable of excelling on global stages,” he asserted.
The event was attended by a high-profile gathering of dignitaries, including the Honourable Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Adams, who delivered a message of support for university sports, and Mr. Bless K. Darkey, Director of the Central Regional Coordinating Council, who represented the Central Regional Minister. Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to leveraging sports as a tool for national cohesion and youth development.
The occasion also brought together a distinguished assembly of Vice-Chancellors and academic leaders from all ten Technical Universities in Ghana. These included Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun (TTU), Sir Prof. Elias N. K. Sowley (DHLTU), Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah (STU), Prof. Ben Quarshie Honyenuga (HTU), Prof. Samuel E. Also present was Mr. Joseph Mensah Oti-Asirifi, Executive Secretary of VCTU-G, and Prof. Atepor, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee.
In his closing remarks, Prof. Eshun encouraged the athletes to compete with integrity, passion, and fairness. “This event is prestigious not just because of the medals, but because of the spirit of sportsmanship it embodies. Challenge yourselves, stay disciplined, and above all, let your talent speak.”
