
Accra, Ghana – Technical Universities in Ghana have gained significant national and global recognition due to their strong emphasis on Competency-Based Training (CBT), industry-related education, and entrepreneurial development, the Vice Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) have said.
Speaking to the media after a high-level meeting with the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, on Thursday, February 6, 2025, in Accra, the Chairman of VCTU-G, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, highlighted the growing international appeal of Ghana’s Technical Universities. He said, “Technical Universities in Ghana have become very attractive globally. Our focus on Competency-Based Training, strong industry linkages, and practical education has positioned us as institutions of choice for skills development. The world is paying attention to the quality of technical education we offer, and we must capitalize on this momentum to further strengthen our programs and infrastructure.”
On his part, Prof. Saaed Ibn Bashiru, Vice-Chancellor of Tamale Technical University, spoke of the transformation of Ghana’s Technical Universities and their growing global reputation. “Today, our institutions attract collaborations, research partnerships, and recognition beyond our borders. To sustain this progress, we need continuous government support, improved infrastructure, and adequate funding to ensure that our Technical Universities remain competitive internationally”, Prof. Bashiru posited.
Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun further outlined the need for increased government support to enhance the global competitiveness of Ghana’s Technical Universities. He reiterated, “Technical Universities have built strong industry partnerships, developed innovative training programs, and positioned themselves as centers of excellence in technical education. However, to maintain our global competitiveness, continuous investment in infrastructure, faculty development, and research is required.”
He explained that Ghana’s Technical Universities attract growing interest due to their skills-driven curriculum, hands-on practical training, and increasing focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. These strengths have led to rising student interest and positioning these institutions as key drivers of national development. Rev. Prof. Eshun added that the rapid growth also presents significant challenges, particularly in infrastructure development and funding, and called on investors and the government to support Technical Universities to sustain momentum and meet international standards.
Earlier, the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, acknowledged the crucial role of Technical Universities in Ghana’s economic transformation. He assured the VCTU-G delegation of the government’s commitment to addressing their challenges and reaffirmed that Technical Universities remain essential to Ghana’s industrialization agenda.
The VCTU-G delegation was led by Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, Vice-Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University. The meeting was attended by several Vice Chancellors, including Sir Prof. Elias N. K. Sowley from Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University, Prof. Kwadwo Adinkra-Appiah from Sunyani Technical University, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi from Accra Technical University, Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh from Kumasi Technical University, Prof. John Owusu from Koforidua Technical University, and Prof. Saaed Ibn Bashiru from Tamale Technical University. Also present at the meeting were Mr. Hamid Kanyiti Salifu, Personal Assistant to the Minister, Ms. Matilda Azuima Esq., Head of Legal Affairs at the Ministry, and Mr. Abubakar Shurabil from the Office of the Minister.
