The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in Technical Universities across Ghana. He made this statement during his maiden meeting with the leadership of the Vice Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) on February 6, 2025. The meeting served as an opportunity to welcome the Minister to his new role and to pledge the commitment of Technical Universities to working collaboratively with the Ministry to advance technical education in Ghana.

One of the key concerns raised by VCTU-G was infrastructure, particularly students’ accommodation, lecture halls, and campus roads. The management of Technical Universities has long advocated for government support in rehabilitating campus roads, which remain in poor condition.

In response, the Minister assured that the government is committed to working with relevant agencies to address these challenges. “My Ministry has engaged the Ministry of Finance to ensure that campus roads and other critical infrastructure at the universities receive the necessary attention. Technical Universities will not be left out. I am committed to ensuring that campus road networks are improved as part of the broader national infrastructure development plan,” he said.

Discussions also focused on the need for continuous expansion of academic facilities to accommodate the growing student population. Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, Chairman of VCTU-G and Vice-Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University, welcomed the Minister’s assurances. “Technical Universities are key to Ghana’s industrialization agenda. With improved infrastructure, we can enhance our training and research capabilities to produce graduates with the skills required for national development,” he noted.

Hon. Iddrisu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, announced his intention to embark on working visits to the various campuses to engage with university management to understand their specific infrastructural priorities. “I will personally visit the Technical Universities to see the conditions on the ground and work closely with the leadership to address their most pressing infrastructure needs,” he assured.

The VCTU-G delegation was led by the chairman, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, Vice-Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University. The meeting was attended by several Vice Chancellors, including Sir Prof. Elias N. K. Sowley from Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University, Prof. Kwadwo Adinkra-Appiah from Sunyani Technical University, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi from Accra Technical University, Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh from Kumasi Technical University, Prof. John Owusu from Koforidua Technical University, and Prof. Saaed Ibn Bashiru from Tamale Technical University. The Executive Secretary of VCTU-G, Joseph Mensah Oti-Asirifi, was also part of the delegation.

Other officials from the Ministry of Education at the meeting included Mr. Hamid Kanyiti Salifu Mohammed, Personal Assistant to the Minister, Ms. Matilda Azuima Esq., Head of Legal, and Mr. Abubakar Shurabil from the Office of the Minister.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening Technical Universities through strategic infrastructure investment. The Vice Chancellors assured the Minister of their full support in working together to enhance technical education and contribute to national development.
